Grant Us Peace: Lenten Music for Choir and Chamber Orchestra
Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 @ 8:00 pmSt. James Cathedral
804 Ninth Ave, Seattle
From conflict to resolution, from dissonance to consonance, Opus 7 takes works from 17th and 18th-century Italy and juxtaposes them with music written in the last 20 years. Although 300 years separate the early repertoire from the later works, the compositions show striking similarities. Antonio Caldara’s stirring Stabat Mater illustrates the startling dissonance of the late Italian Baroque paired with the stark harmonies and modern, soulful lyricism of John Muehleisen’s work of the same name. Also featured are a late Monteverdi madrigal with sacred text, Stabat Virgo Maria, and the world premiere of Stephen Cavit’s arrangement of Amazing Grace for choir, strings, trombones, piano and soloists. The concert concludes with Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks’ majestic Dona nobis pacem for choir and orchestra.
