Opus 7 presents the Northwest premiere of the dramatic and moving Requiem (2011) for soprano and baritone soloists, choir, and string orchestra by Tigran Mansurian, Armenia’s greatest living composer. The work is “dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide” that occurred in Turkey from 1915 to 1917. The Los Angeles Times has described Mansurian’s music as “that in which deep cultural pain is quieted through an eerily calm, heart-wrenching beauty.” Mansurian’s Requiem is a modern masterpiece that reconciles the sound and sensibility of his country’s ancient musical traditions with those of Western practices and the Latin Requiem text. Also included on the program are two major works by Northwest composers: Bern Herbolsheimer’s Stabat Mater for soprano soloist, choir, string quartet, and oboe and The King of Glory by Opus 7’s Composer-In-Residence, John Muehleisen, featuring special guests Jubilate! (St. James Cathedral’s young women’s ensemble). Loren Pontén conducts this annual concert of music for the season of Lent.
